Dry Ice and CO2 (Carbon Dioxide)
Dry ice — familiar from ice-cream shops — is carbon dioxide (CO2) brought to a solid state under high pressure and low temperature. The cold storage facility in this case also relies heavily on dry ice.

CO2 Build-up Risk in Cold Storage
In large cold-storage rooms, evaporating dry ice can raise CO2 concentration, creating a risk of safety incidents. Measurement-based management is therefore necessary.
On-Site Test
We carried out a test by entering the site directly. Within about 10 seconds, the lack of oxygen was physically noticeable: the high CO2 concentration made breathing difficult and caused dizziness.
Because of the safety risk, the instrument was left in place and we exited the room immediately (filmed with the site manager's permission).
★ Key point ★
Whether the detector can measure stably even at low temperatures around −20 °C.
As shown, within a few minutes CO2 rose to nearly 10% vol (100,000 ppm). At this level, exposure can lead to vomiting, fainting, and potentially death.
As the chart indicates, many safety incidents are caused by CO2, so we hope on-site workers always operate in safe spaces and conditions.
GasTiger 2000 Low-Temperature, High-CO2 Measurement
The GasTiger 2000 we supply can measure high concentrations of CO2 stably even in low-temperature environments.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1. Why does CO2 concentration rise in cold-storage rooms?
Dry ice (solid CO2) is widely used in cold storage, and as it evaporates the carbon dioxide concentration increases.
Q2. How dangerous is a high CO2 concentration?
During the on-site test, CO2 rose to nearly 10% vol (100,000 ppm) within minutes — a level that can cause vomiting, fainting, and potentially death.
Q3. Can it measure in sub-zero cold-storage environments?
Yes. The GasTiger 2000 can measure high concentrations of CO2 stably even at low temperatures around −20 °C (operating temperature −20 to 55 °C).
Q4. Can the GasTiger 2000 measure gases other than CO2?
Yes. As a portable multi-gas detector, it can be configured with sensors for up to seven gases.
