FIX5000 Biogas Monitor — NH₃/H₂S/CH₄ High-Concentration Measurement at a Natural Circulation Agricultural Center (Nonsan, Chungnam)
This case covers the installation and commissioning of a FIX5000 environmental monitoring system configured for ultra-high-concentration biogas measurement — NH₃, H₂S, and CH₄ — at a natural circulation agricultural center in Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province.
FIX5000 — 6 Gas Sensors + 6 Environmental Parameters Simultaneously
The FIX5000 is a multi-parameter instrument capable of 12 simultaneous environmental measurements:
- Gas sensors: up to 6 types (user-selected)
- Environmental parameters: up to 6 from PM, temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, illuminance, and barometric pressure
Built-in moisture and dust filters are standard, and an internal pump enables measurement at ambient air or at a specific targeted location.
Ultra-High-Concentration Biogas Sensor Configuration
This unit is equipped with three sensors specifically for measuring ultra-high-concentration biogas generated in natural circulation agricultural processes:
- NH₃ (ammonia): 0–5,000 ppm
- H₂S (hydrogen sulfide): 0–10,000 ppm
- CH₄ (methane): 0–100% vol
Given the high moisture content of the environment, a separate moisture treatment unit was installed alongside the FIX5000. The system measures gas and purges condensate automatically at set intervals.
Relay Output Configuration and Operator Training
Three internal relays are configured according to the user's alarm output requirements. The instrument's wide range of functions makes thorough operator training an important part of commissioning.
Commissioning — Immediate High-Concentration Detection Confirmed
During commissioning, extremely high biogas concentrations were detected immediately — concentrations that would be impossible in a normal ambient environment. Measured values can be plotted as time-series graphs for process trend analysis.
Data is transmitted to a central monitoring system via RS-485, and can also be extracted via USB from internal storage. For remote sites where grid power is unavailable, solar panel and battery storage systems can be used for independent off-grid operation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Why must NH₃, H₂S, and CH₄ be monitored at natural circulation agricultural facilities?
Natural circulation agriculture relies on organic matter fermentation and decomposition. These processes generate large quantities of NH₃, H₂S, and CH₄. NH₃ and H₂S are toxic gases that pose acute hazards to workers; CH₄ creates explosion risk. Beyond safety, monitoring their concentrations provides critical data for managing fermentation process efficiency.
Q2. Why are ultra-high concentration ranges (NH₃ 5,000 ppm, H₂S 10,000 ppm) needed?
Biogas-generating environments can produce concentrations hundreds to thousands of times higher than typical industrial safety limits. Using standard-range sensors causes immediate saturation — producing meaningless readings. Selecting sensor ranges that cover the maximum expected concentrations at the site is fundamental to reliable process monitoring.
Q3. Why is the FIX5000 more suitable than FIX800 for this application?
FIX5000 supports up to 6 gas sensors plus 6 environmental parameters (PM, temperature, humidity, etc.) simultaneously — making it well suited to the multi-parameter monitoring requirements of agricultural environments. Its built-in pump and moisture/dust filters also provide inherent protection for sustained operation in high-humidity, high-particulate agricultural conditions.
Q4. How is the FIX5000 operated independently using solar power?
FIX5000 supports DC 12V and 24V input. A solar panel combined with lithium battery storage provides off-grid power for remote outdoor installations. Battery capacity should be sized based on measurement interval and communication frequency.
Q5. How is RS-485 data connected to a central monitoring system?
RS-485 uses the Modbus RTU protocol, compatible with most SCADA, DCS, and PLC systems for direct connection. Adding an RS-485 to Ethernet converter enables TCP/IP-based remote monitoring as well. Required parameters can be read freely using the FIX5000's published Modbus register map.
