FIX800 5-Gas Detector with LED Display Board — Tunnel Construction Site (Dangjin, Chungcheongnam-do)
A preliminary site survey and meeting were conducted before this installation. Several site-specific challenges were identified, and the installation approach was adapted accordingly.
Site Challenges and Solutions
- Relocatable installation required: The detector position must be movable as tunnel excavation progresses → High-strength magnetic bracket applied
- Outdoor installation — moisture protection required: Equipment must be protected from rain and dust → Transparent weatherproof enclosure (hi-box) applied
- Steel frame interior: H-beam and steel structure prevents conventional wall drilling for mounting → Magnetic bracket eliminates drilling entirely
The combined solution: FIX800 + transparent weatherproof enclosure + magnetic bracket.
The transparent enclosure provides visibility to the display without opening it, while protecting against moisture. The magnetic bracket enables quick attachment, detachment, and relocation on steel structures.
Display Board Installation and Wiring
The outdoor display board was mounted at an angle clearly visible from the site office. Communication cable was pre-threaded into waterproof flexible conduit cut to the measured length before arrival.
Detector Installation and Wiring Completion
The detector was positioned at the confirmed measurement point underground, wiring was completed below, and the team returned to the surface to finalize the above-ground connections. A surface-level distribution panel provided convenient power access, streamlining the installation.
Excess cable was secured clear of worker pathways, and both units were powered on. Gas concentration readings appeared correctly on the display board.
Operator Training and Span Gas Testing
Calibration gas was injected to test concentration response, display board color change, and audible/visual alarm activation. The combination of magnetic brackets, weatherproof enclosure, and pre-prepared cable work significantly reduced installation time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Why are magnetic brackets effective at tunnel construction sites?
Tunnel excavation zones shift continuously as work progresses. Magnetic brackets attach and detach from steel structures instantly — no drilling required — allowing the detector to be relocated as the active measurement zone moves. Eliminating the drilling process entirely provides a substantial reduction in installation time.
Q2. What are the advantages of a transparent weatherproof enclosure?
The transparent material allows the detector display to be read from outside without opening the enclosure — maintaining visibility at all times. Weatherproof construction protects against rain, dust, and moisture, while the impact-resistant structure is appropriate for the demanding conditions of a construction site.
Q3. What is the advantage of using a 220V outlet for power supply?
No separate electrical work — new panel installation or conduit wiring — is required. At temporary construction sites, using an existing site outlet is the fastest and most cost-effective power solution. This approach eliminates both the time and cost of a dedicated electrical installation.
Q4. Why is CO₂ included in the 5-gas configuration for tunnel sites?
Blasting and excavation generate large quantities of CO₂. Accumulated CO₂ displaces oxygen, creating oxygen-deficiency conditions. Korea's revised OSHA includes CO₂ in the mandatory 5-gas monitoring requirement for confined spaces. CO₂ is colorless and odorless — without a detector, dangerous concentrations cannot be perceived before symptoms appear.
Q5. Can delivery lead time be shortened for urgent orders?
Expedited air freight, as used in this case, shortens lead time but incurs additional cost. Sharing the site schedule and required delivery date at the time of order allows the optimal shipping method to be selected. Early ordering combined with a pre-installation site survey minimizes the risk of unexpected schedule delays.
