Hello, this is RS Korea. For this installation, we visited a sewage treatment plant at a national hospital in Gangwon-do.

■ What is a sewage treatment plant?
It is a facility that collects wastewater from daily use, treats it thoroughly, and discharges it safely into rivers or the sea.
■ Purpose of installation

The Occupational Safety and Health Act applies to every worksite. Since the law was revised in 2017, confined spaces carrying a risk of suffocation, fire, or explosion must measure a total of five gases: carbon dioxide (CO2) was added to the original four (O2, CO, H2S, LEL). In environments where harmful gases may be generated, gas concentration must be measured during work, so a gas meter must be installed inside the confined space and a gas status board must be installed outside the entrance so the internal situation can be checked from outside. This particular site was a sewage treatment plant inside a national hospital. Sewage and wastewater treatment plants are environments where hydrogen sulfide is generated; odors are strong, and hydrogen sulfide levels rise rapidly whenever sediment in settling tanks or storage basins is disturbed. Since this is a confined space where worker safety depends on monitoring all five gases required under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, we proceeded with installation of a 5-gas meter.
■ Installed product

The FIX800 is a fixed gas detector that can measure up to five gases with a single unit. The detector is installed where the gas is generated, and the gas status board is installed outside so the internal situation can be checked from the outside.

■ Installation equipment

These are the items required for this installation: the fixed gas meter FIX800, a gas status board, and a custom acrylic enclosure for weatherproofing, since this was an outdoor installation. Unlike previous installations, an extra item was added here. The gas status board is manufactured as a waterproof outdoor unit by default, but during the site survey the facility manager requested a cover so the display would not be fully exposed, so we had one custom made. At RS Korea, we take the site environment into account and work directly with the people who will actually use the product to understand what they need, including custom fabrication where useful.

■ Installation

First, we positioned the mounting bracket and secured the meter in place.

Although the sewage treatment plant is an enclosed space, it is built as a ground-level container structure, so we kept it continuously ventilated throughout the installation work.

This is the outside of the sewage treatment plant. The gas status board is being installed to the left of the entrance. Since the indoor display needed a power connection, we drilled through the wall — straightforward, since it's a container structure.

Here we are preparing to install the custom acrylic enclosure the facility manager requested.

The finished acrylic enclosure has a perforation at the bottom to prevent moisture buildup.

Installation of the finished acrylic enclosure is now complete.

The gas concentrations here aren't high enough to cause harm from brief exposure, but with the windows closed and longer working hours, continuous inhalation of even low concentrations of harmful gas adds up — this isn't a site to take lightly. Rather than installing a gas meter simply because the law requires it, we believe it's essential for protecting worker safety and needs to be actively managed. The installation was completed after a test run, product walkthrough, and training for the facility manager. In enclosed spaces, poor air circulation and isolation from the outside mean that a harmful gas leak or drop in oxygen concentration can lead to suffocation. In odor-generating environments like sewage treatment facilities, installing a gas meter and an external status board is essential for workplace safety. At this site, the meter was installed inside the enclosed facility with the gas status board mounted outside, so the internal conditions can be checked from outside both before and during work, keeping workers safe.
