Project Details
Hello! This is RS Korea. We received an inquiry about a gas detector for a confined space and visited a hospital in Jeonju. The facility manager had first seen one of our LED displays elsewhere and reached out, asking for a setup where the internal reading would be visible immediately upon opening the entrance to the confined space, before anyone goes inside.
Purpose of the Installation
To measure gas inside a confined-space wastewater treatment area and confirm worker safety.
Equipment Installed
FIX800 fixed gas detector, 4-gas configuration.
Sensors installed:
O2: 0–30% Vol
CO: 0–1,000 ppm
H2S: 0–100 ppm
LEL: 0–100% LEL
Installation Points
This is where the wastewater storage tank is kept. The facility asked for the LED display to be visible as soon as the entrance cover is opened, along with a gas detector installed inside. It was pitch dark and too tight for two people to fit inside at once, but the smell was tolerable.
This is the wastewater treatment area. Since the hospital's wastewater treatment facility is located separately, outside the main hospital building, the facility asked for the detector and LED display to be installed on the left-hand wall so the reading would be visible while heading down the stairs.
Starting the Installation
The space was too cramped to go inside and take photos, so these shots were taken from above.
There was no power source available inside the tank room itself, and the tank room is located along a corridor used by hospital staff and visitors, so even running a line through the wall would not have reached a usable power source. Since the wall of the tank room where the detector was installed connects through to the basement level shown on the right in the photo, the power line had to be routed down to the basement and connected to an outlet there.
Power for the LED display had to be drawn from a power strip connected to an air conditioner outlet, and to minimize exposed cabling, the work was carried out by opening the ceiling tiles.
Everything connected properly, with power reaching both the LED display and the fixed gas detector, and the strobe alarm also worked correctly, completing the work at the wastewater tank room.
An LED display is usually installed so that, with the detector inside a confined space, the internal gas concentration can be checked from outside before entry. In this case, however, since the wastewater treatment facility is not inside the hospital building but in a separate structure outside, the facility asked for the display to be installed near the stairs on the left so it would be clearly visible.
For installations at this type of treatment facility, there is one thing we always check with the customer. Supplying power to the LED display through an added breaker on the electrical panel, or through a power strip already installed on site, generally causes no issues. However, if the power strip originally planned for use already has other equipment connected to it and a direct outlet connection is needed instead, the breaker feeding that power strip must be switched off at the panel for electrical safety during the work — and switching off that breaker will also stop any other equipment connected to the same strip. This means it is necessary to confirm with the facility beforehand whether those other devices can be safely powered down during the work.
After completing the installation, we ran the same strobe alarm test, gave the facility manager a demonstration and product explanation, including the calibration interval, and wrapped up the job. Since the display uses LED modules, the facility manager was pleased that the readings were clearly visible even from a distance, making for a satisfying finish. This concludes this post on the hospital installation in Jeonju. Thank you.
