LEL (Lower Explosive Limit) refers to the lowest concentration of a flammable gas mixed with air at which an explosion can occur. The LEL standard for combustible gases provides a safety threshold for the safe use of flammable gases at specific industrial sites and environments.

Korea's Occupational Safety and Health Act recommends detecting five gases when carrying out work, and when performing work in a confined space, it is essential to confirm that the air quality meets the acceptable standard.

  • O2 (Oxygen): 18% or higher, below 23.5%
  • CO (Carbon Monoxide): below 30 ppm
  • H2S (Hydrogen Sulfide): below 10 ppm
  • CO2 (Carbon Dioxide): below 1.5%
  • Flammable gas: below 10% LEL

Complying with the concentration standards above is essential to ensuring safety at the worksite.

POSCO wanted a product with IoT smart functionality rather than a conventional gas detector.

On site, they needed to be able to check gas concentrations in real time via smartphone or PC, and they also wanted data logging and storage.

This appears to reflect a move toward secondary and tertiary safety checks for workers.

The EDW500 is diffusion-type by default, but if you purchase the optional auto pump, it can also be used in pump-suction mode. Because it communicates via Bluetooth, the auto pump switches on automatically the moment the unit itself is powered on.

An IoT wireless module chip is also included as standard. There is no communication fee or additional cost.

We tested how the unit detects and alarms when flammable gas is released from a lighter. Depending on the gas concentration, alarms occur up through the second stage (A1, A2), though the video clip only captured the A1 alarm.

Through the standard-equipped IoT wireless module chip, real-time monitoring is possible via smartphone, tablet, or PC, and multiple units can be checked at the same time. When an alarm occurs, it can also be confirmed via pop-up alerts on smart devices or PCs. It can also track a worker's movement via GPS communication — this is the EDW500, a smart IoT gas detector.
