Hello from VPE Korea. This case covers the installation of a FIX800 5-gas detector and LED display board at a wastewater treatment plant.

Installation Specification

• Location: Confined space inside a wastewater treatment plant
• Detector: FIX800 fixed multi-gas detector
• Channels: O₂, CO, H₂S, EX (combustible gas), CO₂
• Monitoring: LED display board (gas status display)

Wiring — Rigid Steel Conduit for a Clean Finish

Power cables were routed in rigid steel conduit for a clean, protected finish. GW flexible metallic conduit is used on other sites depending on structural requirements.

Detector Installation — Deep Underground Position

The detector protecting workers was installed deep inside the underground structure. In compliance with Korea's OSHA, all 5 gases are measured simultaneously. When gas leaks are detected or oxygen drops, audible and visual beacon alarms activate immediately.

Display Board — Positioned for Maximum Visibility

The display board was installed at the optimal position for worker visibility. Audible and visual alarms are repeated at the display board as well as at the detector.

Since confined-space incidents can occur unexpectedly, internal atmosphere must always be assessed before entry.

Power Supply and Commissioning

All conduit from the MCC to the control box was neatly finished in rigid steel before commissioning began.

After power-on, measurement begins automatically after a 1-minute warm-up. The weatherproof display board operated without fault even during heavy rainfall after installation.

Q1. Why must all 5 gases be measured simultaneously at a wastewater treatment plant?

Wastewater environments generate H₂S, NH₃, CH₄, and CO₂ while consuming oxygen — creating multiple simultaneous hazards. Korea's revised OSHA recommends monitoring O₂, CO, H₂S, EX, and CO₂ in confined spaces. CO₂ is colorless and odorless — it can create oxygen-deficiency conditions without any perceptible warning, making measurement essential.

Rigid steel conduit provides high mechanical strength and is suitable for explosion-proof installations and environments with significant physical impact risk. GW flexible metallic conduit is suited to complex routing paths and installation around structural obstacles. The appropriate choice depends on site structure and safety requirements.

Q3. Why is a 1-minute warm-up required after power-on?

Electrochemical sensors require time for their electrochemical reactions to stabilize after being energized. During the warm-up period, readings can be unstable and false alarms may occur. After 1 minute, the sensor has reached a stable state and accurate measurement begins.

Q4. How is the weatherproofing performance of outdoor display boards verified in practice?

This installation confirmed continued operation during heavy rainfall after commissioning. Weatherproof display boards are rated to IP65 or higher, providing protection against direct water jets from all directions. Post-installation leak testing and functional testing verify performance under actual field conditions.

Q5. How is web monitoring configured in VPE Korea's solution?

FIX800 RS-485 data is routed through an IoT gateway to the internet, enabling real-time gas concentration monitoring from a PC or smartphone and delivering alarm notifications to safety supervisors when thresholds are exceeded. Multiple sites can be integrated into a single dashboard for centralized management.
