Project Details

Hello, this is RS Korea. Today we'd like to share an installation we carried out at a site in Hongcheon, Gangwon-do — an environmental management facility that processes livestock manure, food waste, and other organic residues.

Installed Product

The product installed was the FIX800, a fixed gas detector from WANDI, a specialist gas-detection brand. A single unit can be configured with up to five gas sensors as required under Korea's Occupational Safety and Health Act. The photo on the left shows a single-gas configuration, and the photo on the right shows a multi-gas configuration.

Please refer to the photo above. The WANDI FIX800's display changes depending on how many gases are installed. Out of roughly 40 available gas types, it can be configured from a single gas up to five gases with dual sensors, with all installed gases displayed simultaneously in real time. When connected to optional accessories such as a display board or PLC, readings can also be monitored externally in real time, allowing an immediate alarm response if a hazardous level is detected.

The site we visited for this installation was a public facility that manages and treats various types of environmental residue, including livestock manure, food waste, and sediment. Although the treatment process is continuously ventilated, malodorous hazardous gases are generated on an ongoing basis, so we were asked to install gas detectors for worker safety.

Reference Accident Case

Please refer to the image above. This shows an actual accident that occurred during residue-treatment work. The contributing causes identified were: the tank was not designated and managed as a confined space; no work permit was issued; there was no record of hazardous gas concentration measurements; unauthorized personnel were not restricted from entering; and no safety watch person was assigned. Inside the tank, hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) was measured at 74 ppm — 7.4 times the 10 ppm exposure limit — along with carbon monoxide (CO) at 23 ppm and an oxygen level of 19.9% Vol.

To prevent this type of accident, a safety watch person should be assigned, unauthorized entry should be restricted, and gas concentrations must be measured and monitored in any location where the air quality falls outside safe limits or where hazardous gases are generated.

Installation Points
Detectors were installed at four points, with one display board location. The detectors monitor hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and carbon monoxide (CO), the gases generated during the treatment process; because high humidity at the site can interfere with gas measurement, a pre-treatment (sample conditioning) unit was also installed.

Installation Point 1: General Treatment Equipment Room

The first installation point is the general treatment equipment room, which houses the conveyor that transports food waste from the receiving area to the treatment area, along with the shredding and sorting equipment. Although the screw conveyor is enclosed, odor was generated during inspection and cleaning of this initial sorting process near the receiving area, so the detector was installed on the wall beside the screw conveyor where odor was strongest.

Installation Point 2: Automatic Shredding and Sorting Room

The second installation point is the automatic shredding room, where the residue sorted in the general treatment room is shredded. Like the previous room, this area generated odor, so the detector was installed on a wall near the conveyor.

Installation Point 3: Inbound Storage Tank

The third installation point is the inbound storage tank — a facility that separates out more than 80% of the solid content from sediment, livestock manure, food waste, and other residue received from various sources, as one step in a treatment sequence of thickening, digestion, dewatering, and landfill (or offshore disposal). At this stage, sludge is dewatered to the point where it can be handled as a solid ("dewatering cake") with a moisture content of 85% or less. As with the other points, this area generates odor from the decomposition of sludge, so the detector — intended to measure hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) released during this process — was installed on a wall near the pulper agitation tank.

Installation Point 4: Digester Feed Pump Room

The final installation point is the digester feed pump room, which houses the pump that transfers thickened sludge from the storage tank to the digester. This room is located underground; its ceiling is not fully sealed but uses grating for ventilation, and like the other points, it generates odor, so the detector was installed on the wall.

Display Board Installation Point: Central Control Room

To allow the readings from all four detectors to be viewed together and monitored in real time from inside the office, an 8-channel display board was configured. It was installed on a wall in the central control room, located on the third floor.

For the gas concentration display board, cabling had to travel up three floors from installation point 4 (the digester feed pump room) to the central control room. Using a fish tape, the power and communication cables were routed through the cable tray in the ceiling of the compressor room on the first floor; this work included some elevated work.

All power and communication cabling exposed outdoors was protected using flexible conduit, and the detectors and display board were successfully installed. The installation was completed with an alarm test, commissioning, and a product briefing.

When you are uncertain what gases are present in your work environment, or you know the gas type but need to confirm the precise concentration, choosing the right equipment before purchase can be difficult. Working closely with a specialist to consider all relevant factors — environmental conditions, gas type, frequency, and concentration — is the safest way to select a detector with the correct measurement range. RS Korea is a gas-specialized company offering more than simple product sales, including in-house calibration, domestic repair service, custom manufacturing, and installation work. Drawing on our experience across demonstrations, site surveys, deliveries, repairs, and installations in a wide range of environments, we provide tailored, one-on-one solutions for any gas-measurement environment.

Today's project summary — Purpose: worker safety by process area at an environmental management facility that generates hazardous gas; Product: 4 × WANDI FIX800 fixed detectors and an 8-channel gas concentration display board; Gas and range: H₂S 0–100 ppm, CO 0–1,000 ppm; Installation crew and time: 4 people, 12 hours; Notes: detectors (for hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide) and a display board were installed across four odor-generating process areas — the general treatment equipment room, automatic shredding and sorting room, inbound storage tank, and digester feed pump room; readings from all four points were consolidated onto an 8-channel display board; all power and communication cabling was run through waterproof corrugated conduit; and the work included elevated work using the cable tray in the first-floor compressor room.

This concludes today's post on the gas detector and display board installation at this environmental management facility. If you have any questions about installation, commissioning, on-site repair, or other environmental monitoring equipment, please feel free to reach out to RS Korea. Thank you.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1. Why were hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and carbon monoxide (CO) chosen for this installation?

These are the two hazardous gases generated during the facility's treatment of livestock manure, food waste, and sediment, so detectors were configured specifically to monitor H₂S and CO at each process area.

Q2. Why were detectors installed at four separate points?

Odor and hazardous gas were confirmed at four distinct process areas — the general treatment equipment room, the automatic shredding and sorting room, the inbound storage tank, and the digester feed pump room — so a detector was installed at each of these points to cover the full treatment process.

Q3. What accident case prompted attention to this type of facility?

A real accident during residue-treatment work was cited, caused by a tank that was not designated or managed as a confined space, the absence of a work permit and gas-measurement records, and the lack of entry restrictions or a safety watch person. Hydrogen sulfide inside the tank measured 74 ppm — 7.4 times the 10 ppm exposure limit — alongside 23 ppm of carbon monoxide and an oxygen level of 19.9% Vol.

Q4. Why was an 8-channel display board used?

An 8-channel display board was installed in the third-floor central control room so that readings from all four detectors across the facility could be consolidated and monitored together in real time from a single office location.

Q5. How long did this installation take?

The full installation, covering four detectors, a pre-treatment (sample conditioning) unit, and the 8-channel display board, was completed by a four-person team in about 12 hours.
