Project Details

Inert gases commonly used in research laboratories are chemically near-unreactive and can appear inherently safe, but a leak in a confined space causes oxygen levels to drop, creating an asphyxiation hazard that requires ongoing management.

Alarm setpoint: audible alarm activates below 18.5% oxygen

Nitrogen gas has a density similar to air, so it neither rises nor sinks under normal conditions. However, when liquid nitrogen escapes from a cylinder, the resulting cold gas has a higher density and settles gradually from the floor upward.

For safety, the detector was installed at a highly visible location near the nitrogen tank.

An oxygen concentration display board was mounted above the laboratory entrance so that workers can check the interior air condition and confirm it is safe before entering and working.

For laboratories using inert gases such as argon, helium, nitrogen, or carbon dioxide, installing an oxygen concentration monitor is recommended to prevent asphyxiation from gas leaks.
