Project Details

It's been a while since our last blog post — this is Jeong Pil-seung, Assistant Manager at RS Korea's Technical Sales Department.

Since winter 2021, this marks our fourth installation of a gas detector at a dog crematorium facility. Due to municipal ordinances, all previous installations had been limited to Namyangju — this time, unusually, the installation took place in Incheon. As it turns out, this particular facility falls under the jurisdiction of Incheon Seo-gu. While it would be ideal for regulations nationwide to require similar monitoring, that's beyond our control — we simply do our best with each job that comes our way.

With a tight schedule between order placement and required opening date, we conducted a site survey to ensure an error-free installation. This is the dog crematorium located in Incheon Seo-gu — the office interior was largely complete while finishing construction was still underway elsewhere in the building.

Since the gas sampling point is at the exhaust stack, accessing it required climbing onto the roof — a dizzying height. During the roofing work, we asked for a brief pause to inspect the area and found the beam spacing dense enough to work safely from. Fortunately, several 220V outlets were available nearby, making power supply far simpler than running a direct line from the main distribution panel.

The analyzer to be installed is WANDI's fixed multi-parameter environmental instrument, the FIX 5000.

It supports up to 12 channels of combined gas sensors and environmental instrumentation. As shown, up to 6 gas sensors can be connected to the main board. Note that PM2.5 and PM10 particulate sensors occupy gas sensor slots, so if simultaneous particulate monitoring is required, the number of available gas sensor slots is reduced to 4.

Additional environmental parameters that can be connected via RS485 communication include: 1. wind speed, 2. wind direction, 3. temperature, 4. humidity, 5. atmospheric pressure, 6. illuminance, 7. rainfall — with the range of connectable sensor types potentially expanding further depending on the application.

The sensors installed today measure: NOX (NO2-based), SOX (SO2-based), and HCL — three gases — along with temperature, humidity, PM2.5, and PM10, for a total of seven environmental parameters monitored simultaneously.

An internal filter and pump allow the unit to draw in gas samples from a distance, so simply running a sampling line from the crematorium's exhaust point lets us measure and analyze the gas conveniently without having to climb up each time.

A functional test before installation is essential. The display shows "OFF" since the detector isn't yet connected. The FIX-5000 display can be programmed to show custom values or labels at any position; when many channels are connected, a slideshow function can rotate through and display multiple channels' data simultaneously.

With the site survey and testing complete, we proceeded with installation. It began raining as soon as work started. We drilled through the duct and inserted a heat-resistant steel pipe, securing it in place; from the point where the gas has sufficiently cooled, we switched to clear urethane hose to simplify future maintenance.

The hose running down the wall was secured with cable clamps, and a 3-way valve was added to allow selective measurement between Unit 1 and Unit 2.

We couldn't take photos during the anchor bolt work, which required two people working simultaneously. The FIX 5000 was mounted on a flat floor surface. Since the display board might need to be relocated in the future, it was mounted on a dedicated tripod, with a junction box placed below to allow future cable extension without cutting the corrugated conduit.

Because installation took place before the district office's operating permit was issued, we weren't able to observe actual gas readings during live operation — a bit of a missed opportunity — but based on past experience, we don't anticipate any issues.

The rooftop work was a little nerve-wracking, but having pre-wired the cable runs in advance made the rest of the installation go smoothly. We hope RS Korea's FIX5000 proves useful for this operation going forward — and while we'd normally wish for continued growth, given the nature of this particular business, we'll leave that sentiment unsaid.
