Installed Gases
Project Details
RS Korea returned to a telecommunications company branch building in Wonju, Gangwon-do to complete an additional FIX800 five-gas detector installation, one level further underground than a previous project at the same site, following the client's satisfaction with earlier installations at both the Wonju and Dongjak-gu branches. This installation continues to satisfy Article 618 of Korea's Occupational Safety and Health Standards, requiring monitoring of five gases (O2, CO, CO2, H2S, EX) in confined spaces to prevent worker asphyxiation. Equipment: A FIX800 fixed multi-gas detector configured for all five legally required gases, paired with a custom-built LED status board, providing gas concentration monitoring both inside and outside the work space. Installation location: A diesel storage tank room. Diesel is a flammable liquid that becomes an explosive vapor hazard when it evaporates, and inadequate ventilation raises the risk of asphyxiation as combustible gas concentration increases. The detector was mounted at the deepest point of the tank room, with the display board positioned directly above the entrance. Safety procedure: Before entering, the team conducted a toolbox meeting covering the equipment to be installed, set up safety signage, and ran a blower to ventilate the space. A portable EDW500 IoT gas detector was used to verify safe atmospheric conditions before work began, then left on site to provide ongoing mobile and web-based gas monitoring. Installation work: The display board was mounted using a two-person ladder team (standard practice for elevated work), followed by detector installation in a notably cramped space due to the tank's footprint; work lighting was used throughout given the poor natural lighting in the corner location. Cable runs used waterproof corrugated conduit, with safety harnesses required for the elevated portions of the work. Commissioning: After installation, calibration gas was used to force an alarm condition, confirming that both the internal and external alarms activate simultaneously — allowing workers to evacuate quickly in an emergency. Project summary: - Purpose: Five-gas monitoring under Article 618 of the Occupational Safety and Health Standards for confined-space asphyxiation prevention - Equipment: FIX800 fixed multi-gas detector (5-gas) with dedicated FIX-DS 5-channel display board - Location: Diesel storage tank room - Crew: Two field technicians, one site supervisor - Duration: Approximately 3 hours, including material setup and toolbox meeting The detector installed at this facility's original wastewater treatment room last year continues to operate normally, and this additional installation was completed successfully.
