Project Details

Hello, this is our team at RS Korea.

Today we visited a building in Yongsan, Seoul, after receiving a request to install a fixed gas detector.

Purpose of Installation

Since October 18, 2024, an amendment to Korea's Occupational Safety and Health Standards regarding CO2 fire suppression system management has required that oxygen concentration detectors and alarm devices be installed not only in fire suppression agent rooms, but also in the protected areas covered by the suppression system. This is what prompted the inquiry.

Installed Product

The product installed at this site was the FIX800 fixed gas detector in a single-gas configuration.

Installation

Outside the electrical room, we installed a remote display so that workers can check the oxygen concentration inside the room before entering.

The facility manager tested several positions before deciding on the final display location. As with the detector itself, the display was installed in a highly visible spot, and at a height that's easily accessible for future maintenance and servicing.

After completing the display installation, we moved on to the detector. At the customer's request, the power and communication lines were routed through the existing cable trays in the ceiling and floor rather than drilling through the walls, so the work involved opening the ceiling and floor panels to route the cabling.

The first FIX800 fixed detector installation was completed.

The second FIX800 fixed detector was also completed.

When asked how the post-installation test works, we demonstrated the response and alarm test by breathing near the sensor.

The customer noted that the red alarm light was easy to see, and the installation was completed.

Summary

1. Gas detectors and alarms must be installed not only in fire suppression agent rooms, but also in the protected areas they cover.
2. A protected area refers to the zone covered by a sprinkler suppression system.

A Quick Product Highlight

We'd also like to briefly introduce our newest product — the EDW500 portable gas detector.

In addition to gas measurement, the EDW500 includes a SIM card slot for GPS tracking, so you can check exactly where the device is currently being used.

Users and safety managers can also check the worker's environment and real-time gas concentration readings remotely via smartphone or computer.

자주 묻는 질문 (FAQ)

Q1. Why was a gas detector required in the protected area outside the fire suppression agent room?

Since October 2024, updated occupational safety and health regulations require oxygen detectors and alarms in both CO2 fire suppression agent rooms and the protected areas they cover, due to the suffocation risk from accidental CO2 discharge.

Q2. What gas was this detector configured to measure?

This site used a single-gas FIX800 configuration for oxygen (O2) monitoring.

Q3. Why were the power and communication lines routed through the ceiling and floor instead of the walls?

At the customer's request, we used the building's existing cable trays in the ceiling and floor to avoid drilling through the walls, which required opening the ceiling and floor panels to route the cabling.

Q4. What is a "protected area" under the fire suppression regulations?

A protected area refers to the zone covered by a fire suppression system, such as the area within a sprinkler system's range.

Q5. How was the detector's alarm function tested after installation?

We demonstrated the detector's response and alarm function on site by breathing near the sensor, showing the customer how the alarm light activates when oxygen levels change.
