Endoscopes and other reusable medical instruments that come into direct contact with patients must be sterilized after each use. These instruments are sterilized daily in an ETO sterilizer. The issue is that ETO (ethylene oxide) — the gas used in these sterilizers — is highly toxic.

In South Korea, ETO (ethylene oxide) is classified as a hazardous substance. The occupational exposure limit for workers is set at 1 ppm. 1 ppm is equivalent to a concentration of 0.0001%. The fact that the exposure limit is set at such a trace level clearly demonstrates how hazardous this gas is — no further explanation is needed.

When fitted with an ETO sensor, the FIX800 fixed gas detector measures ETO concentrations in the range of 0 to 100 ppm. The alarm concentration threshold can be freely configured by the user. For example, when the alarm is set to 1 ppm, triggering that threshold activates the integrated beacon with a 90 dB audible alarm and visual strobe.

Hospital ETO sterilization rooms are typically very small — often only 3 to 7 m² in size. While awareness of ETO toxicity has grown and most rooms are now equipped with ventilation systems, small amounts of gas can still leak during sterilizer operation when gas valves or the unit door are opened. If the ventilation system malfunctions or has insufficient capacity, the toxic ETO gas can accumulate and directly harm hospital workers.
