GasTiger 2000 — CO₂ Measurement Inside Cell Culture Incubators (Seoul)
This case covers CO₂ (carbon dioxide) measurement inside cell culture incubators using the GasTiger 2000.
Background — Why Incubator CO₂ Measurement Matters
Cell culture incubators maintain elevated CO₂ concentrations — typically around 5% — to support cell growth conditions. Since this is more than 100 times higher than ambient air, accurate measurement during maintenance, sampling, or troubleshooting is important. This delivery used a 0–20% CO₂ configuration to ensure sufficient range above the expected maximum.
Moisture Pretreatment — Essential for Humid Sample Gas
This measurement involved a humidity variable. Rather than drawing incubator gas directly into the instrument, a moisture conditioning unit was connected in-line to protect measurement accuracy and prevent sensor damage.
The inline conditioner is a Testo accessory originally designed for combustion gas analysis, but its superior moisture removal performance makes it equally effective in non-combustion applications such as this one.
Even though the moisture was not visible to the naked eye, condensation appeared in the sampling hose within five minutes — confirming that the pretreatment unit was necessary and effective.
Bluetooth Printer for On-Site Documentation
Data can be analyzed via software, but this application required tamper-evident records to be printed immediately on site. A Bluetooth printer was supplied alongside the detector to produce printed measurement tickets at the point of measurement — response time and accuracy were confirmed to be excellent.
National Laboratory Certification — 99.9% Agreement
Against a certificate issued by a national accredited testing institute, the GasTiger 2000 measurements agreed with the reference CO₂ value to within 99.9% — confirming reliable measurement performance for this application.
Beyond portable instruments, a fixed FIX800 installation can provide continuous real-time CO₂ data streaming — the right approach depends on whether monitoring needs to be continuous or periodic.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Why is CO₂ concentration elevated inside cell culture incubators?
Incubators supply CO₂ to maintain physiological conditions for cell growth — typically around 5%, which is more than 100 times ambient concentration (0.04%). Accurate CO₂ measurement during maintenance or sampling ensures that the incubator environment is correctly calibrated and that personnel are not inadvertently exposed.
Q2. Why was the 0–20% measurement range selected?
Incubator CO₂ can approach 5%, so a 0–20% range provides sufficient headroom. A narrower range risks off-scale readings if concentrations exceed expectations, while a wider range reduces resolution at lower concentrations. The 0–20% configuration was judged to best balance range and resolution for this application.
Q3. What problems arise from measuring without moisture pretreatment?
Electrochemical and NDIR sensors can produce unstable readings when exposed to condensing moisture — and internal condensation can cause permanent sensor damage. In humid sample streams, a desiccant pretreatment unit is essential to protect both measurement accuracy and instrument longevity.
Q4. Do Bluetooth-printed records have legal validity?
On-site printouts cannot be altered at the point of measurement, which supports data integrity. Whether printed records carry legal force depends on the relevant regulations and intended use. For formal compliance reporting, printed records are typically submitted alongside an accredited laboratory certificate.
Q5. When should portable versus fixed CO₂ monitoring be used for incubators?
Portable instruments like the GasTiger 2000 are well suited for periodic inspections, troubleshooting, and mobile use across multiple units. Fixed FIX800 installations are preferable when 24-hour continuous monitoring and automated data logging are required. Combining both approaches provides the most complete monitoring coverage.
