Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a colorless, odorless, non-flammable gas formed by the combination of carbon and oxygen. At ambient concentrations (~400 ppm / 0.04%), it is harmless. However, in enclosed industrial spaces, CO2 can rapidly accumulate to levels that cause asphyxiation through both oxygen displacement and direct CO2 toxicity.
CO2 is approximately 1.5 times heavier than air, making it prone to pooling in pits, basements, cold storage floors, and fermentation tank bottoms. Because it has no odor, workers may not realize they are being exposed to dangerous concentrations until they are incapacitated.
