Formaldehyde (CH2O): A Group 1 Carcinogen in Hospitals, Woodworking, and New Buildings
Formaldehyde (CH2O, HCHO) is a colorless gas with a pungent odor, widely used in building materials (plywood, MDF, particleboard), paints, adhesives, textiles, and medical disinfectants. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies formaldehyde as a Group 1 human carcinogen.
It is a primary cause of Sick Building Syndrome and poses risks to workers and occupants in hospitals, laboratories, funeral homes, and furniture factories. Formaldehyde off-gassing decreases over time but accelerates in high-temperature, high-humidity environments.
