National Hospital Wastewater Treatment Plant — OSHA 5-Gas Confined Space Monitoring Installation
This project installed FIX800 five-gas fixed detectors and a LED display board at the wastewater treatment facility of a national hospital in Gangwon-do. RS Korea performed the complete project — design, supply, installation, and commissioning. A national hospital wastewater treatment plant is an underground confined space processing medical effluent, and is fully subject to Korea's Occupational Safety and Health Standards for confined space management. Achieving regulatory compliance while ensuring comprehensive worker safety was the primary objective of this installation.

What Is a Wastewater Treatment Plant?
A wastewater treatment plant collects, purifies, and safely discharges used water from daily operations — including medical, clinical, and pharmaceutical effluent in the case of hospital facilities. National hospital wastewater contains antibiotics, disinfectants, and pharmaceutical compounds that affect microbial decomposition activity, producing H₂S, CO₂, and CH₄ at variable and sometimes elevated rates, with correspondingly elevated oxygen deficiency risk.
OSHA 5-Gas Confined Space Measurement Requirements
- O₂ (Oxygen) — Safe range: 18.0–23.5%. Below 18.0%: entry prohibited immediately
- CO (Carbon Monoxide) — Combustion and decomposition byproduct. TWA below 25 ppm
- H₂S (Hydrogen Sulfide) — Primary anaerobic decomposition product. TWA below 1 ppm
- EX (Combustible Gas, LEL) — CH₄, H₂ and other flammable gases. Keep below 10% LEL
- CO₂ (Carbon Dioxide) — Organic decomposition product. High concentrations displace O₂ and cause asphyxiation
RS Korea Installation Procedure
- Step 1: Pre-installation site survey — installation point selection, electrical infrastructure assessment, cable routing plan
- Step 2: Pre-delivery functional testing of all detectors and display board
- Step 3: On-site installation and wiring
- Step 4: Commissioning and final alarm setpoint confirmation
- Step 5: Operator training and formal handover
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Korea's Occupational Safety and Health Standards apply to national hospital wastewater treatment facilities?
Yes. OSHA regulations apply to all workplaces where employees are present, regardless of facility type or operator. National hospitals, public institutions, and medical facilities are all subject to confined space requirements — pre-entry 5-gas measurement, adequate ventilation, and standby monitor deployment are mandatory.
Why is a hospital wastewater treatment plant more hazardous than a standard wastewater facility?
Medical wastewater contains antibiotics, disinfectants, radioisotopes, and pharmaceutical compounds that alter microbial decomposition activity. The complex organic composition of hospital effluent can produce unpredictable gas generation patterns beyond those typical of standard municipal wastewater, making continuous monitoring even more important.
Can a single FIX800 unit monitor all five required gases simultaneously?
Yes. FIX800 provides up to five sensor slots (model-dependent), accommodating O₂, CO, H₂S, LEL, and CO₂ simultaneously in a single unit. This allows full legal five-gas confined space coverage from one detector, providing a cost-effective solution for regulatory compliance.
Why is the FIX-DS display board essential alongside the FIX800 detector?
The FIX800 is installed inside the confined wastewater treatment space, making direct visual access impossible from outside. The FIX-DS display board at the entrance allows workers to verify all five gas readings before entry — establishing the most effective pre-entry safety verification system.
Is installation service available for remote locations such as Gangwon-do?
Yes. RS Korea provides nationwide on-site installation services. Remote locations including Gangwon-do, Jeju Island, and the southern coast are all covered under the full project scope — pre-installation survey, installation, commissioning, and operator training included.
