■ What is a sewage treatment plant? It is a facility that collects dirty water (water that is used in various daily lives and can no longer be used), treats it cleanly, and discharges it into rivers or the sea. ■ Purpose of installation

The Occupational Safety and Health Act applies to all sites. As the law was revised in 2017, it was legislated that confined spaces are places where there is a risk of suffocation, fire, explosion, etc., and carbon dioxide (CO2) must be added to the existing four major gases (O2, CO, H2S, LEL) to measure a total of five gases. In particular, since gas concentration must be measured during work in environments where harmful gases may be generated, gas meters must be installed inside confined spaces and entrances and exits are required. A gas status board must be installed outside so that the internal situation can be ascertained. The place visited for this installation was a sewage treatment plant located within a national hospital. Sewage and sewage treatment plants are environments where 'hydrogen sulfide' is generated. The odor is strong, and the amount of hydrogen sulfide generated rapidly increases when sediments such as sedimentation ponds and storage tanks are stirred. Inside the sewage treatment plant, which is a closed space, the purpose is to ensure the safety of workers. FIX800 complex gas meter [sensor user-selectable custom-made product] FIX800 is an installation-type gas detector that can measure up to five gases with one product. The gas detector is installed inside where the gas is generated, and the gas concentration status board is installed so that the internal situation can be checked from the outside.

There is an installation-type gas meter FIX800, a gas concentration status board, and an acrylic box made for waterproof purposes as it is an outdoor installation. Unlike existing installation cases, there are additional items added to the equipment. The gas concentration status board is a waterproof product that is manufactured for basic outdoor use. However, during the on-site inspection, the person in charge requested that we make a cover so that the electronic display board would not be completely exposed, so we made it. First, position the bracket and secure the product to install the gas meter.

Although the sewage treatment plant is an enclosed space, it is built as a container building on the ground, so installation work was carried out with continuous ventilation during installation.

This is the outside of the sewage treatment plant. A gas concentration status board is being installed on the left side of the entrance. Because it was necessary to connect the internal electronic signboard and power, drilling was done in the wall. Because it was a container building, there was no difficulty in drilling into the wall.

Preliminary work is underway to install the acrylic box requested by the person in charge.

4The product was calibrated in the technical room before being shipped, but the concentration was measured higher than expected. Even though ventilation was continued during work, more gas was detected than expected, so I was embarrassed. Although the gas concentration is not high enough to cause health problems when exposed for a short period of time, I thought that this was a site that should not be easily overlooked, considering that low concentrations of harmful gases were continuously inhaled when the windows were closed to create an enclosed space and working hours were long. Rather than simply thinking, ‘I have to do it because the law says I have to measure it,’ I thought that it was essential to install a gas meter and manage its values for the safety of workers. After trial operation, product information, and training for the person in charge, the installation work was completed. In closed spaces, air circulation is poor and the space is blocked from the outside, causing suffocation when harmful gases leak or oxygen concentration decreases. In environments where bad odors occur, such as sewage treatment plants, it is essential to install a gas concentration meter and place a status board outside to ensure the safety of the workplace. In this case, a meter was installed inside the tunnel and a gas concentration status board was installed outside. This ensures the safety of workers by allowing them to check the internal situation from outside before or during work.
