Hello, this is RS Korea. Today we're sharing an installation carried out at a site in Gyeonggi-do. The facility develops and manufactures pharmaceuticals and medical devices, covering everything from R&D through production. Today's installation took place in the inspection room where developed and manufactured products are examined.
Product installed
The unit installed was the FIX800, a fixed gas detector from the gas-detection specialist brand WANDI.
A single FIX800 unit can be configured with up to five safety-related gases under Korea's Occupational Safety and Health Act, in either single-gas or multi-gas configurations.
The size of the sensor housing differs depending on the configuration: a single-gas unit has one sensing element and a slimmer housing, while a multi-gas unit has two or more sensing elements and a correspondingly thicker housing. The display also differs accordingly. From a list of roughly 40 gases, the FIX800 can be configured from a single gas up to five gases with dual sensors, with all configured gases measured and displayed simultaneously in real time. It can also connect to an optional remote display or PLC, allowing readings to be monitored externally and enabling an immediate alarm response if a hazardous condition is detected.
Installation environment
This installation was carried out in a confined space that also handles hazardous gases as part of the equipment inspection process. Due to the customer's confidentiality requirements, some details of the site cannot be disclosed.
According to a press release from Korea's Ministry of Employment and Labor, 348 workers were killed or injured in confined-space asphyxiation accidents over the past 10 years. This fatality rate is roughly 44 times higher than the 1.1% rate typical of general workplace accidents, making it one of the most dangerous categories of industrial accidents.
Before entering a confined space, oxygen concentration and any hazardous gases must be measured to confirm safe conditions — this is essential to protecting worker safety.
To prevent asphyxiation accidents, entry should never be permitted until safety has been confirmed. First, supervisors must clearly understand the hazards of the confined space and ensure workers are properly informed. Second, supervisors must confirm that conditions are safe before work begins — measuring oxygen concentration and any hazardous gases present. Third, workers themselves should never enter a confined space until the air quality inside has been confirmed safe.
Gases and measurement ranges
Fixed multi-gas detector — gases configured: hydrogen and acetylene sensors, which are commonly involved in the equipment inspection process, plus an oxygen sensor to help prevent worker asphyxiation, for a total of three gases.
Measurement ranges: O2 (oxygen) 0–30% Vol, H2 (hydrogen) 0–1,000 ppm, C2H2 (acetylene) 0–10 ppm.
Installation point
Today's installation involved a single detection point, located inside the inspection room where developed and manufactured pharmaceutical and medical device products are examined.
The entrance to the inspection room had a glass door, allowing the interior to be checked from outside. Because the distance from the entrance to the detector's installation point was short, the beacon light mounted on the detector (an optional feature) was clearly visible, so a separate remote display was not installed.
This is the installation point. The unit was mounted on the side wall of the fume hood used for gases such as H2 (hydrogen), C2H2 (acetylene), and N2 (nitrogen) during the product inspection process. Please note that many details in the surrounding photos have been masked due to the customer's confidentiality requirements.
Installation
The FIX800 unit was first set up and connected to power.
Installation proceeded carefully, given the presence of nearby equipment used for the inspection process, including gas cylinders and a flow meter.
Installation completed
With only a single detector and no separate remote display to install, the work was completed quickly. Calibration was carried out using calibration gas, and the installation concluded with a product briefing and usage guidance for the person in charge.
When the gases present at a site are unknown, or the exact concentrations are difficult to confirm even when the gases are known, selecting the right detector in advance can be challenging.
