Project Details

Hello, this is RS Korea's technical team.

Today's post covers an installation of the FIX800 fixed-type 4-gas detector together with two sets of digital gas concentration display boards at a tunnel construction site.

Installation Purpose

The Occupational Safety and Health Act applies to every worksite. In confined spaces such as tunnels and utility conduits in particular, gas concentration must be measured at all times during work, which is why a gas detector is installed together with an external display board so that conditions inside the tunnel can also be monitored from outside.

RS Korea recently exhibited this same equipment at a construction safety exhibition, with a booth themed around confined spaces such as tunnels and utility conduits — featuring the FIX800 fixed-type gas detector and the gas concentration display board.

The site visited for this installation is likewise a construction site, at a tunnel that qualifies as a confined space. The client requested a gas detector and display board be installed to protect worker safety during tunnel construction. During the site survey, the gas types and installation points were determined and a date was scheduled for the installation.

Equipment Installed

The FIX800 is a fixed-type gas detector from WANDI, a specialist brand in gas detection equipment.

Left: single-gas configuration / Right: multi-gas configuration. The unit on the left is fitted with a single gas sensor, while the unit on the right is fitted with a multi-gas sensor module. The sensor housing below the display is the measurement section — the single-gas model has a slimmer housing, while the multi-gas model has a wider housing.

The display layout changes depending on the number of gases installed. Out of roughly 40 available gas types, the unit can be configured from a single gas up to a maximum of five gases with dual sensor modules, and all installed gases are measured and displayed simultaneously in real time. When connected to an optional display board or a PLC, measured values can also be monitored externally in real time, allowing immediate response through an alarm in the event of a hazard.

Installation Equipment

This is the equipment prepared for today's installation. Because the distance between the detector and the display board is longer than usual in a tunnel environment, extra cable and waterproof flexible conduit were prepared, along with a shovel for burying the cable.

Installation Points

Inside the tunnel construction site. The detector installation point is on the wall to the right of the tripod, and power inside the tunnel will be supplied through a junction box.

Outside the tunnel site. The gas display board installation point is to the right of the front of the safety information board, with the power connection to be made through a junction box on the rear right side of the board.

Installation

First, the mounting bracket position is set for the detector.

With the bracket installed, the FIX800 is then mounted and secured. Before organizing the power cable, the detector's operation is checked.

The gas display board position is set and secured on the front of the safety information board. After securing it, a hole is made for the power connection and the board is connected to power through a junction box on the rear.

Since power needs to run from the detector inside the tunnel to the display board outside, the cable length is measured and the power line is fed through waterproof flexible conduit using a fish tape.

Since exposed conduit on the surface can become an obstruction at the worksite, it is buried using a shovel.

Installation Complete

The installation is complete. The work concluded with commissioning, a product briefing, and training for the site personnel.

In confined spaces, air circulation is often poor or the space is sealed off from the outside, so a gas leak or drop in oxygen concentration can lead to asphyxiation. In confined spaces such as tunnels on construction sites, gas concentration must be measured and displayed to protect worker safety.

For this site, the detector was installed inside the tunnel and the gas display board was installed on the external safety information board. This allows conditions inside the tunnel to be checked from outside both before and during work, helping to secure worker safety.

Project Summary

Environment: Tunnel construction site
Products: FIX800 + 2 sets of digital display board/warning light
Gas and Range: O2 (Oxygen) 0–30%, CO (Carbon Monoxide) 0–1,000 ppm, H2S (Hydrogen Sulfide) 0–100 ppm, LEL (Combustible Gas) 0–100% LEL
Notes: 3 technicians, approximately 1 day (8 hours); detector installed in the confined space inside the tunnel, gas display board installed outside the tunnel; exterior cable run in waterproof flexible conduit; conduit buried in the floor to avoid obstructing foot traffic; power supplied via junction boxes near the detector and display board.

This concludes our post on the FIX800 fixed-type gas detector and display board/warning light installation at a tunnel construction site. If you have any questions about site surveys, installation, or other environmental measurement equipment, please feel free to contact RS Korea.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1. Why is a gas detector required at a tunnel construction site?

Tunnels are confined spaces where the Occupational Safety and Health Act requires continuous gas concentration monitoring, since poor air circulation can allow gas leaks or oxygen deficiency to quickly become life-threatening.

Q2. Which gases does this system measure?

The FIX800 in this installation measures O2 (0–30%), CO (0–1,000 ppm), H2S (0–100 ppm), and LEL combustible gas (0–100% LEL).

Q3. Why is a display board installed outside the tunnel?

The external display board lets site personnel check the gas conditions inside the tunnel in real time from outside, both before and during work, without having to enter the confined space.

Q4. How long did the installation take?

The installation was completed by three technicians in approximately one day (an 8-hour shift), including cable routing between the detector and the display board.

Q5. Up to how many gases can the FIX800 measure at once?

The FIX800 can be configured with a single gas sensor up to a maximum of five gases using dual sensor modules, selected from around 40 available gas types.
