FIX800 Fixed Gas Detector Installation — Department Store Water Treatment Tank Room and Fire Suppression Agent Room (Gwanggyo, Gyeonggi-do)
This case covers FIX800 fixed gas detector installations at two locations inside a department store: a water treatment tank room and a fire suppression agent room.
Water Treatment Tank Room — Custom Enclosure Configuration
Rather than a standard wall-mount, a custom enclosure was fabricated at the customer's request, allowing the detector to be moved to different sampling locations as needed — similar to portable operation. The gas being monitored at this location is oxygen (O₂).
As the water treatment tank room is classified as a confined space, the FIX800 was configured with four sensors for comprehensive worker protection: O₂ (oxygen), CO (carbon monoxide), H₂S (hydrogen sulfide), and LEL (combustible gas). The FIX800's key advantage is the ability to select and monitor multiple gas types in a single unit.
LED Display Board — Real-Time Monitoring with Dual-Zone Alarm
An LED display board installed outside the facility shows real-time gas concentration readings from the detector inside. When hazardous concentrations are detected, alarms activate simultaneously both inside and outside the facility.
Fire Suppression Agent Room — Explosion-Proof Steel Conduit Installation
If suppression agent leaks, oxygen concentration drops rapidly — causing asphyxiation. Real-time concentration monitoring and management is essential in this space.
Live readings are visible on the detector display, and the integrated beacon alarms when hazardous levels are reached. As this area is classified as an explosion-proof (Ex) zone, rigid steel conduit was used for all wiring.
The external LED display board allows personnel outside to monitor internal gas concentrations in real time and receive alarm notifications when hazardous levels are detected.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Why is a department store water treatment tank room classified as a confined space?
Tank rooms have restricted natural ventilation. Organic decomposition in water can generate H₂S and CH₄ while consuming oxygen. As a space not regularly occupied by workers where hazardous gases may accumulate, it is classified as a confined space under Korea's OSHA — requiring gas monitoring before and during worker entry.
Q2. When is a custom enclosure configuration the right approach?
A custom enclosure is appropriate when fixed wall-mounting is impractical due to structural constraints, or when semi-portable operation is needed — allowing the detector to be moved to different sampling points within the space. This case required the latter: the customer needed to sample at various locations along the tank room.
Q3. Why is explosion-proof steel conduit used in fire suppression agent rooms?
Fire suppression agent rooms store CO₂ and other suppression gases under pressure. A leak can create a potentially explosive atmosphere. In explosion-proof zones, rigid steel conduit provides the gas-tight mechanical protection required to eliminate electrical ignition sources — a requirement that standard flexible conduit cannot meet.
Q4. How do the detector and display board alarm simultaneously inside and outside?
When the FIX800 detects a concentration exceeding its configured threshold, it activates its relay outputs. This signal triggers the display board's alarm circuit, causing both the board's alarm LED and audible alarm to activate — alerting personnel outside the space at the same time as those inside.
Q5. Can both the tank room and suppression agent room be installed on the same day?
Depending on the structural layout and wiring paths, both zones in the same facility can typically be completed in a single day when the installation plan has been established through a prior site survey. Explosion-proof conduit work may require additional time and should be factored into the schedule.
