When Fixed NH3 Gas Detectors Are Required
Ammonia (NH3) is widely used as a refrigerant in cold-chain systems, and is also generated at livestock waste facilities, fertilizer plants, and septic facilities. Environments with constant NH3 presence need fixed gas detectors that operate 24/7, regardless of worker presence.
NH3 Health Effects by Concentration
| NH3 Level | Health Effect | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1–5 ppm | Odor detectable | Olfactory threshold |
| 25 ppm | Korean 8-hr TWA occupational limit | MoEL standard |
| 50–100 ppm | Eye, nose, throat irritation, coughing | Prepare to evacuate |
| 300 ppm | IDLH — immediately dangerous to life | NIOSH |
| 1,700 ppm | Potentially fatal within 30 minutes | Pulmonary edema |

Real Accident — NH3 Leak at Cold-Storage Plant (2020, Chungbuk)
At a food cold-processing factory in Chungcheongbuk-do, aged refrigerant pipe fittings failed, releasing NH3 that spread to a 200 m radius before firefighters arrived. A fixed detector was installed but its alarm was not relayed externally, delaying initial response. (Source: National Fire Agency Chemical Incident Report 2020)
WANDI FIX800 — Fixed 5-Gas NH3 Detector
The WANDI FIX800 mounts directly in refrigeration machine rooms, livestock facilities, and fertilizer plants to monitor NH3 around the clock. One unit simultaneously measures up to five gases including NH3, O2, CO, H2S, and EX. Integration with the FIX-DS LED display allows external personnel to see real-time NH3 readings before entering. External strobe alarm integration ensures the Chungbuk scenario—where alarms were not audible outside—cannot recur.
Prevention Scenario with FIX800
At the 2020 Chungbuk facility, a FIX800 with external strobe and FIX-DS panel integration would have broadcast visible and audible NH3 alarms outside the machine room at the moment of pipe failure, enabling immediate evacuation of the surrounding area well before emergency services arrived.
