What is Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) Gas?
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a colorless gas with a pungent odor generated when sulfur-containing materials combust. Major sources include petroleum and coal combustion, metal smelting, sulfuric acid manufacturing, pulp and paper mills, and food/beverage preservative processing. SO2 reacts with moisture to form sulfuric acid (H2SO4), causing severe chemical burns to skin, eyes, and airways.
